On November 5, Chiang Mai Governor Nirut Pongsitthithavorn announced the upcoming Yi Peng Festival 2024, to be held from November 14-17 under the theme "The Enchantment of Mae Rim’s Artistic Light and Culture." The press event, held at the Waroros Market, included participation from Chiang Mai Mayor Asanee Buranupakorn, Chiang Mai Police Commander Maj. Gen. Thawatchai Pongwiwatchai, and other officials and community leaders.
Governor Nirut and Mayor Asanee floated krathongs along the west bank of the Ping River, near the Waroros Market, to pray for peace, prosperity, and economic recovery in Chiang Mai following recent floods. Tourists are invited to experience authentic Lanna Yi Peng traditions, including a stunning light display along Tha Phae Road, featuring 14 light arches adorned with symbols honoring the King’s 72nd birthday and representing the 12 zodiac signs.
Governor Nirut expressed readiness to welcome tourists, noting high booking rates in Chiang Mai’s hotels (85-90%, with some fully booked) and an influx of travelers at Chiang Mai Airport, which is seeing over 25,000 passengers daily. The festival is expected to generate several billion baht in tourism revenue, underscoring Chiang Mai's significance as a cultural heritage city.
To ensure safety, authorities will enforce a strict ban on sky lanterns within the city limits, with police, administrative officers, and municipal teams on patrol. Violations will lead to legal penalties, with measures in place to protect lives and property, especially during family gatherings for traditional respects and blessings.
Chiang Mai Mayor Asanee highlighted the festival’s grand parade of krathong floats, competing for the Royal Trophy, featuring 29 processions with elaborate displays, cultural performances, fireworks, and special effects. The event also includes beauty contests, lantern contests, folk song competitions, Lanna-style krathong floating, and various cultural rituals like spirit shrine blessings and river-purification ceremonies.
The Yi Peng Festival 2024 promises to be a majestic event, marking the start of Chiang Mai's tourism season and celebrating the arrival of the winter season, drawing visitors to experience the charm and beauty of the Lanna heritage in full grandeur.
