Pak Meng Pier in Trang, a key tourist gateway to the Andaman Sea, is facing urgent safety concerns as its high season begins. Damages from a storm three months ago have left sections of the pier’s roof, walkways, and floating docks in disrepair. Local business owners, including Somsak Sueboonthong, a tourism industry representative, have raised concerns about falling roof tiles posing a hazard to visitors, especially as the season's influx of tourists has already started. Although a 2025 government budget of over 10 million baht has been approved for repairs, no start date has been confirmed.
Provincial Governor Songklod Sawangwong noted that discussions are ongoing between the Marine Department, which originally built the pier, and the National Parks Department, which now manages the surrounding area, to address overlapping jurisdictional issues before repairs can commence. Business owners have also highlighted other long-standing maintenance issues, such as inadequate lighting from Pak Meng Beach to the pier. With an increase in tourist numbers on weekends, local officials and operators emphasize the need for quick action to enhance safety and preserve the region’s reputation as a safe and attractive destination.
