On November 9, Roger Lohanant, president of the Thai Animal Protection Association, addressed concerns about a scene in the drama series "Mae Yua," in which a cat appeared to be sedated, exhibiting realistic convulsions. This portrayal led many to worry that the scene may have involved animal cruelty, potentially violating Thailand’s Animal Cruelty Prevention Act, which prohibits inflicting harm on animals outside of medical treatment. If found guilty, offenders may face fines up to 40,000 baht or imprisonment of up to two years. Lohanant noted that the use of sedation—even under expert or veterinary supervision—could still constitute a legal violation.
He further highlighted that the association had formally requested the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) to seize and review the full footage of the scene and to investigate those involved. In response, the DLD confirmed it would examine the materials, as it holds the authority under Section 25 of the Animal Cruelty Prevention Act to seize animals, remains, and relevant documents as evidence in suspected cruelty cases.
