Thailand's Minister of Labor, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, has proposed reforms to improve healthcare benefits for Social Security Fund members, particularly those receiving care through contracted private hospitals. Due to ongoing complaints about insufficient medical coverage under the current system, the Ministry is exploring the feasibility of replacing Social Security Fund management of healthcare benefits with private health insurance policies. Boonsong Thapchaiyuth, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labor, announced on November 9 that a subcommittee will study the feasibility of this shift, although no timeline has been set for a final decision.

Boonsong emphasized that any private insurance arrangement would need to provide healthcare, preventive services, and disease protection benefits that meet or exceed the current coverage. He acknowledged public concerns about private insurance limitations and assured that if implemented, the Ministry would serve as a protective backing to ensure comprehensive coverage, avoiding restrictions that could leave members vulnerable. He noted that, depending on study results, legislative amendments might be required to support this change.
