On November 9, 2024, Kamolsak Leewamoh, Chair of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Legal Affairs, Justice, and Human Rights, announced the formation of a subcommittee to examine the long-standing impacts of the 2004 Tak Bai incident on ongoing unrest in Thailand’s southern provinces. The subcommittee, composed of ten members, aims to address unresolved grievances, explore pathways to restoring state legitimacy in the region, and study the consequences of the expired statute of limitations on the incident. Led by Kamolsak, the panel includes key lawmakers, legal experts, and representatives from various political parties.

The subcommittee’s mandate includes assessing the repercussions of the Tak Bai case, producing a comprehensive report for the main committee’s review, and undertaking additional tasks assigned by the larger committee, excluding direct fact-finding. Additionally, a seven-member advisory team was appointed to provide support, including members from Thai legal and human rights organizations, as well as experts in public policy and law.
