In the early hours of November 9, an armed group of at least five individuals broke into Forest Protection Unit SOR 2 (Waritchaphum) in Sakon Nakhon Province, Thailand. According to Surachai Ajchayaboon, Director-General of the Royal Forest Department, the assailants carried guns and knives, attacked the on-duty officers, restrained three of them, and confiscated five mobile phones. They also stole two government-issued shotguns with ammunition and removed around 20 logs of valuable confiscated Siamese rosewood, amounting to an estimated loss of 375,000 baht. Additionally, the intruders dismantled the unit's surveillance cameras.
The Royal Forest Department has since reinforced security measures for confiscated timber, including 24-hour patrols with reports via a designated communication channel, enhanced lighting, and additional surveillance cameras in vulnerable areas. These efforts are aimed at safeguarding valuable timber in secure storage facilities. The incident has been reported to Chalermchai Sri-on, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, and authorities are actively investigating to apprehend the perpetrators.
