On November 10, an elephant in a Buddhist Kathin ceremony in Bueng Kan province went into musth, leading to a fatal incident. During the procession, an agitated elephant threw a woman, 47-year-old Preewan, off its back. The elephant then attacked her, resulting in serious injuries that led to her death in the hospital. Another individual, 61-year-old Somporn, was critically injured when the elephant pushed him into a parked motorcycle.
The accident occurred at Wat Sutthiwanaram temple, where over a thousand people had gathered to participate in the festival. Video footage captured the festive atmosphere just before the incident, showing the elephants leading the procession and locals interacting with them. However, as temperatures rose, a young elephant became increasingly agitated, swinging its head and eventually charging through the crowd, causing panic.
Local authorities are gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. No charges have been filed as investigations continue, and the deceased's family is currently focused on traditional funeral arrangements.
