Chiang Mai International Airport has announced temporary operational changes for Loy Krathong, the festival taking place from November 15-16, 2024, to ensure aviation safety. According to Group Captain Ronnakorn Chalermsaenyakorn, the airport director, flights scheduled after 7:00 p.m. will be modified or canceled to reduce risks from sky lanterns, which could endanger aircraft.
As of November 11, 2024, a total of 170 flights have been adjusted. These include 74 cancellations (36 domestic, 38 international), 96 rescheduled flights (68 domestic, 28 international), and 16 additional special flights (8 domestic, 8 international). Airlines have informed passengers in advance to minimize disruptions and assist with travel planning.
To enhance security, the airport has increased patrols, set up random vehicle inspections at entry points, and is conducting regular checks on passengers and their belongings. Additionally, vehicles are prohibited from parking directly in front of the terminal to prevent potential security issues.
The airport advises passengers to arrive earlier than usual due to expected congestion. Extra runway inspections will be conducted—rising from 6 to 10 checks per day—to clear any fallen lantern debris, ensuring safe operations. Special teams are on standby to promptly remove lanterns from the runway area if alerted by air traffic control or pilots.
