On November 22, reports confirmed the progression of the Songkhla Lake Crossing project, which aims to connect Mueang Songkhla District and Singhanakhon District through either a bridge or an underwater tunnel. Initially proposed during General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s tenure as Prime Minister, the project seeks to address long-standing transportation issues caused by reliance on ferry services, which often face delays and operational challenges. The initiative has received widespread public support, with over 40,000 signatures backing the plan as an alternative to current ferry crossings.

Weeradej Cheewapattananuwong, Chief Engineer of the Department of Rural Roads, led a team to Songkhla to meet with stakeholders, including government agencies and local representatives, to assess the feasibility of both bridge and tunnel options. Data collection and field studies in the two districts are underway, with the feasibility study results expected by December 2024. The study will focus on technical, economic, and environmental factors to determine the optimal solution.

This project aims to improve transportation efficiency, reduce commuting times, and enhance tourism and economic growth in Songkhla Province. Once completed, the crossing could become a new landmark in southern Thailand.
