On November 8, Wasan Phailiklee, a member of Thailand's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), praised the government’s recent actions to fulfill its commitment to eradicating statelessness by 2024. This commitment, first announced at the 2019 High-Level Segment on Statelessness in Geneva, seeks to resolve longstanding citizenship issues. On October 29, the Cabinet approved accelerated criteria for granting legal status and nationality to eligible long-term residents, stateless children born in Thailand, and ethnic minority groups, affecting over 483,000 individuals awaiting legal status.
The Cabinet decision aims to reduce application processing times for permanent residency from 270 days to five days and for nationality applications for children from 180 days to five days. This policy aligns with Thailand’s Constitution and international human rights agreements, ensuring that individuals have the right to be legally recognized.
NHRC commended the government’s commitment to address one of the world’s largest stateless populations, a move recognized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Thailand. The NHRC emphasized the importance of vigilance against potential registry fraud to ensure fairness and true equality. In support of this effort, the NHRC continues collaborating with civil society, NGOs, academics, and government agencies to promote access to basic rights and human rights protections.
