Thailand's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), led by Minister Chalermchai Sri-on, is preparing to welcome a new pair of giant pandas from China. On November 9, Permanent Secretary Jatuporn Buruspat confirmed that Thailand is coordinating with Chinese authorities to finalize details for the pandas’ arrival. However, updates are necessary for the panda exhibit at Chiang Mai Zoo, as the original enclosure, built over 20 years ago, no longer meets current Chinese standards. MNRE plans to complete these renovations with input from China to ensure all standards are met.

Minister Chalermchai has sent a formal letter to Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasizing the country’s readiness for the pandas’ arrival. The anticipated timeline includes a new Memorandum of Understanding in 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of Thailand-China diplomatic relations, with the pandas expected to arrive in 2027 after construction of the new exhibit is complete.

When asked if the pandas would rival the popularity of “Moo Deng,” the well-known hippo at Khao Kheow Zoo, Jatuporn responded that each animal has its unique charm. He noted that by the time the pandas arrive, both Moo Deng and the pandas can offer distinct attractions at their respective zoos, enhancing visitor experiences.

Addressing concerns from animal welfare advocates, Jatuporn clarified that the pandas are symbols of diplomatic friendship and assured that the new exhibit will prioritize their well-being.

Regarding pollution in northern Thailand, Jatuporn confirmed that the pandas will be housed in a fully enclosed, air-conditioned environment, protecting them from PM2.5 air pollution. The pandas are expected to stay in Thailand for about 10 to 20 years, with their care covered by MNRE according to international standards.
